Format service
If anything reflects the much-quoted “global village”, it is the explosion of the format industry, where ideas of all types move rapidly around the globe, and where shows are adapted and remade on a local basis to suit the needs of individual markets. This arguably represents the key programming development of the last ten years.
Where once the emphasis was primarily on gameshows (thanks to the pioneering efforts of the likes of Goodson-Todman and Reg Grundy), contemporary formats now encompass practically all genres of programming, and have also invented many of their own along the way.
Need to be informed
In this fast-paced environment, there is a vital need to keep up with international developments, to be aware of the new breaking formats, and to be in a position to make informed decisions.
The TAPE Format Service has been created to provide a complete solution for the busy executive. It combines the regular delivery of special reports identifying new international format developments with a flexible consultancy component, allowing clients direct access to TAPE staff via phone or email, to ask questions or request further information about a format of interest.
While the service is completely adaptable and can be designed to suit individual needs, the key components are as follows:
In-Format report
A special report designed specifically to provide a concise reference to new and emerging international formats.
Produced monthly and delivered by email, the report provides an up to date snapshot of what’s going on in the format world, covering a wide range of markets and genres, and including both new shows and updates on existing formats (e.g. new market clearances, performance information etc.)
The report is deliberately brief to encourage reading, but always features market, channel and producer information, along with a programme description and any other relevant information.

Consultancy back-up
Supporting the report component of the service is the facility for clients to call or email TAPE staff with specific queries. This could be to follow-up on a show covered in a recent report, and to request some further information, or to ask another format related query.
The level of response will be dependent on individual agreement, but can include:
- Researched performance tracking
- Genre trends and analysis
- Development history of a specific genre (e.g. trends in makeover shows)
- Market or broadcaster overviews
- Client specific reports designed to reflect particular client needs

Meetings and Presentations
TAPE staff can be made available to meet with clients to discuss first hand specific areas of interest, or to provide presentations to client teams on recent trends and developments.
